Tips for Guests

Never been a guest on a podcast before? Don’t worry. It’s easy. Below are some tips to help you prepare for — and nail! — your interview.

Podcast Dos and Dont’s

  1. Be yourself. Don’t worry about using a radio voice or sounding intelligent. You were invited to be a guest because the host wholeheartedly believes our listeners will enjoy hearing what you have to say.

  2. Be honest. If you’re not comfortable using real names, dates, or bill numbers, it’s okay to keep it high-level. Be as specific as you can, but don’t make up names or details that didn’t really happen.

  3. Take a few minutes to jot notes or reflect on what stories, experiences, or lessons learned you think our audience might want to hear about. You don’t need to spend hours doing research, but we always appreciate guests who come prepared.

  4. Try not to use inferences, inside jokes, or terms that you would not feel comfortable explaining on air. Remember that our audience includes people inside and outside the industry who may not have a deep understanding of lobbying in your particular state.

  5. With tip #4 in mind, take advantage of the opportunity to teach our listeners something new, be it a process or term they didn’t know, a skill they should practice, a piece of career advice, or a mistake you made that others can avoid.

  6. Before and during your interview:

    • Use wired or Bluetooth headphones to avoid echo.

    • Remember to turn off your phone/email notifications, ceiling fans, and anything else that might vibrate or make noise.

    • Try to clear your workspace of papers or objects that will shuffle around or distract you.

    • Seat yourself in a comfortable position to avoid moving your chair.

    • Use the restroom and get yourself some water before your start time.

    • If there will be lawnmowers, children, dogs, laundry/dishes, or any other background noises, let your host know that you need to reschedule.

  7. Have fun! We are so grateful you would take time out of your day to indulge us with your insights, and we want this experience to be just as much fun for you as it is for us.
